               My               favorite               tree               and               flower               share,               coincidentally               enough,               the               same               name.

The               more               than               majestic               magnolia               is               the               single               greatest               tree               in               the               world               for               climbing.

The               fragrance               of               the               fruit               of               the               magnolia               tree--by               which               I               mean               the               flower--is               the               kind               of               sweetness               that               poets               spin               words               into               meaningless               rhymes               over.

If               you               want               to               fulfill               the               challenge               of               planting               a               tree               that               your               kids               will               love               when               they               are               kids               that               also               produces               a               flower               that               their               spouse               will               enjoy               as               a               gift               on               their               50th               wedding               anniversary,               then               the               magnolia               is               really               the               only               choice               that               makes               even               the               slightest               bit               of               sense.

And               here               are               three               tips               to               make               that               multi-decade               process               go               easier.
               30               Feet               Rule
               The               30               feet               rule               applies               to               magnolias               during               the               planting               stage.

If               you               want               your               magnolia               to               achieve               primacy               as               the               greatest               plant               in               the               yard,               then               above               all               else               you               must               put               into               action               the               30               feet               rule.

The               majesty               of               the               magnolia               is               a               bit               hard               to               contemplate               when               the               youngling               is               not               even               as               tall               as               the               eaves               of               your               house.

Picture               in               your               mind               the               day               several               years               hence               when               the               magnolia               towers               over               the               house               in               such               a               way               that               even               the               hottest               day               of               August               feels               more               like               the               fifth               hottest               day               of               May.

The               slow               development               upward               and               outward               of               the               magnolia               requires               that               sapling               planting               be               carefully               measured               off               30               feet               from               any               obstacle               that               could               interfere               with               its               achieving               full               magnificence.

Plant               your               magnolia               30               feet               from               your               house,               30               feet               from               any               nearby               three               and,               needless               to               say,               30               feet               from               a               power               line.
               Soak               up               the               Sun
               Magnolias               are               found               in               abundance               in               the               South.

Mississippi               is               actually               known               not               as               the               Jim               Crow               State,               but               the               Magnolia               State.

While               that               may               have               been               merely               a               paperwork               mistake,               the               fact               remains               that               Dixie               is               home               to               the               best               that               magnolia               trees               have               to               offer.

The               reason               for               this               is               exposure               to               the               sun.

Yeah,               sure,               you               can               grow               magnolias               in               the               shade               of               nearby               trees               or               a               towering               building               next               door               and               that               tree               will               be               as               perfect               for               climbing               as               any               magnolia               that               grows               with               the               sunshine               remaining               unimpeded.

But               magnolia               trees               that               don't               enjoy               exposure               to               the               sun's               rays               will               produce               fewer               blossoms.

And               since               the               enticing               aroma               of               the               white               flower               of               the               magnolia               is               such               an               enormous               part               of               the               tree's               appeal,               why               would               you               want               to               make               that               choice               unless               you               were               absolutely               forced               to.

If               you               want               to               make               sure               that               your               magnolia               reaches               the               full               fruition               of               its               powerful               appeal,               make               sure               to               plant               it               where               the               sun               shines               heaviest.
               Transplant
Magnolia               trees               are               such               incredible               works               of               art               that               you               one               day               find               yourself               tearing               up               at               the               very               idea               of               having               to               move               and               leave               your               tree               behind.

It               would               be               ridiculous               to               try               to               transplant               a               full               grown               magnolia               unless               you               have               some               serious               money               behind               you               and               even               then               it               would               seem               unreasonable               since               you               could               always               buy               new               ones.

While               your               magnolia               tree               is               still               fairly               young               and               manageable,               however,               there               is               little               to               no               reason               not               to               take               it               with               you.

Or               even               just               to               move               it               to               another               part               of               the               yard.

As               long               as               you               take               care               not               to               enact               unnecessary               trauma               upon               the               roots               and               engage               in               the               process               of               transplanting               the               tree               when               its               roots               are               experiencing               growth               in               the               spring,               you               should               be               able               to               successfully               move               the               magnolia               without               undo               harm.

March               and               April               are               the               ideal               months               for               transplanting               a               magnolia.

Any               other               time               and               you               run               the               risk               of               killing               this               magnificent               specimen.

    The               Golden               Wedding               Anniversary               is               a               major               milestone.

    It               is               like               the               marriage               "Hall               of               Fame".

    What               do               you               get               for               people               who               have               achieved               that               amazing               "mile               marker".

    The               first               and               foremost               thing               is               to               have               all               the               people               that               mean               something               to               them               around               them               on               or               near               this               special               day.

    Children,               grandchildren,               great-grandchildren;               brothers,               sisters,               as               well               as               dear               friends,               are               people               who               should               be               in               attendance.

    This               should               be               a               tribute               to               the               couple;               a               physical               tribute.

    This               is               the               human               creation               they               have               donated               to               the               earth,               and,               part               of               the               couple's               legacy.
                   The               couple               that               I               had               experience               with               was               my               wife's               grandparents.

    They               were               in               their               mid-seventies               when               we               had               the               celebration               for               them.

    Some               family               members               came               from               as               far               as               two-thousand               miles               away.

    Food               was               served,               and,               afterwards,               there               was               a               huge               cake               (a               wedding               cake),               which,               as               tradition               dictates,               was               cut               by               them.
                   When               the               party               was               over,               our               grandparents               were               asked               back               to               their               church               by               their               pastor.

    My               wife's               grandfather               was               the               treasurer               of               the               church               and               a               pretense               was               made               about               needing               him               to               write               a               couple               of               emergency               checks.

    It               wasn't               a               lie.
                   When               the               couple               arrived               back               at               the               church,               they               found               the               entire               congregation               waiting               for               them.

    When               they               entered,               they               were               greeted               with               a               standing               ovation.

    They               were               presented               with               a               gold               plaque               which               had               their               marriage               years               inscribed.
                   At               that               point,               the               pastor               called               them               up               to               the               podium.

    He               advised               my               wife's               grandfather               that               he               was               to               write               a               twenty-five               hundred               dollar               check               to               himself               for               his               many               years               as               a               faithful               worker.
                   Next,               he               was               told               that               he               and               his               wife               were               going,               all               expenses               paid,               to               his               home               country               of               Scotland;               it               was               a               life-long               dream               for               both               of               them.

    They               both               cried.
                   My               wife               and               I               held               separate               get-togethers               when               this               was               over.

    All               men               were               invited               back               to               my               house               and               all               women               went               to               my               mother-in-law's               house.

    There,               we               toasted               the               grandparents,               not               because               of               their               marital               achievements,               but,               each               person               in               attendance               took               a               turn               telling               the               grandparent               a               story               about               something               they               had               done               that               had               an               impact               on               them.

    It               was               a               very               emotional               and               loving               time.

    There               were               a               lot               of               happy               tears,               and,               a               lot               of               laughing
                   A               Golden               Anniversary               should               include               family,               gifts,               and,               tribute.

    Let               this               outstanding               couple               know               what               they've               meant               to               everyone,               and,               make               sure               that               they               know               their               legacy               is               a               great               one.

    In               May               of               1961,               racial               tensions               in               the               United               States               were               reaching               their               boiling               point.

    The               U.S.

    Supreme               Court               had               overturned               Plessy               v.

    Ferguson,               the               landmark               case               that               established               the               legality               of               separate               but               equal               facilities               for               different               races,               back               in               1954               with               the               Brown               v.

    Board               of               Education               case.

    However,               several               Southern               states               went               to               great               lengths               to               avoid               integration               of               the               races.

    One               way               was               with               buses.

    In               1960,               the               Supreme               Court               ruled               that               segregation               could               not               be               enforced               on               interstate               buses.

    This               did               not               deter               some               Southern               states               from               requiring               segregation.

    To               show               that               some               states               were               not               abiding               by               the               ruling,               a               group               of               people               known               as               the               Freedom               Riders               began               a               long               bus               journey               starting               in               Washington,               D.C.,               and               ending               in               New               Orleans,               La.

    They               never               reached               their               destination.

    There               were               minor               troubles               and               arrests,               as               the               group               expected,               in               the               northernmost               Southern               states.

    It               was               in               Alabama               and               Mississippi               that               they               met               with               violence               that               destroyed               the               buses,               physical               violence               and               jail               time.
                   The               immediate               aftermath               of               the               original               Freedom               Riders               journey,               and               those               journeys               in               the               subsequent               months,               was               to               make               desegregation               of               interstate               transportation               and               businesses               a               priority.

    The               Kennedy               administration               saw               that               the               best               way               to               end               the               violence               was               to               end               segregation.

    Although               it               took               many               years               to               fully               end               the               policy,               this               marked               the               first               step               of               a               difficult               journey.

    Ten               years               later,               the               Supreme               Court               determined               that               one               viable               way               to               achieve               integration               was               through               busing.

    This               means               that               some               Caucasian               children               would               be               bussed               to               predominantly               African               American               school               districts               and               some               African               American               children               would               be               bussed               to               predominantly               Caucasian               school               districts.
                   It               was               in               1967               that               prohibitions               on               interracial               marriage               were               declared               unconstitutional               by               the               U.S.

    Supreme               Court.

    Before               this               point,               many               people               did               not               like               the               idea               of               African               American               people               marrying               Caucasian               people.

    The               Freedom               Riders               had               also               challenged               people's               feelings               on               interracial               relationships               by               having               two               people               on               the               buses               acting               as               an               interracial               couple.

    Beginning               in               1967,               marriage               licenses               could               no               longer               be               denied               to               the               interracial               couples               who               sought               them.
                   In               1988,               after               overcoming               a               potentially               fatal               veto               by               then               President               Ronald               Regan,               the               Civil               Rights               Restoration               Act               became               law.

    Three               years               later,               the               civil               right               movement               received               another               boost               when               the               Civil               Rights               Act               of               1991               became               law.

    Both               of               these               laws               expanded               protections               against               discrimination               either               in               private               institutions               or               in               employment,               respectively.
                   On               the               50th               anniversary               of               the               Freedom               Riders,               it               is               important               to               remember               what               those               brave               men               and               women               did.

    They               helped               bring               an               end               to               segregation               and               paved               the               way               for               others               to               voice               their               discontent,               which               led               to               many               more               civil               rights               victories               over               the               years.

    Everybody               knows               The               Beatles               come               from               Liverpool,               right,               luv?

    Ever               been               there?

    About               200               miles
    north               of               London               on               a               train               out               of               Euston               Station               or               a               drive               up               on               the               M1               and               the               M6,               Liverpool               was               the               1998               "European               Capital               of               Culture."               Now,               two               more               jewels               have               been               added               to               Liverpool's               crown.

    The               latest               highlights               are               the               childhood               homes               of               Paul               McCartney               and               John               Lennon,               placed               on               England's               list               of               national               historic               sites               with               Grade               II               listed               status,               which               protects               them               from               alteration.

    Preserved               for               future               generations               of               tourists               are               the               plain               and               simple               1930s               residential               structures               adorned               with               handsome               blue               plaques               to               indicate               their               very               famous               one-time               inhabitants.
                   Paul               McCartney's               House               
                   
                   England's               National               Trust               has               ensured               that               the               home               maintains               the               look               it               had               back               in               the               '50s               when               McCartney               was               growing               up               at               20               Forthlin               Road.

    Upon               moving               in               in               1955,               an               upright               piano               was               placed               in               the               front               room               by               Paul's               father,               who               played               it,               as               well               as               the               trumpet.

    McCartney               lived               in               this               house,               known               as               Mendips,               from               age               13               to               22               and               composed               about               100               songs               here.
                   John               Lennon's               House               
                   
                   Lennon               was               a               couple               of               years               older               than               Paul.

    He               lived               not               far               away               with               his               Aunt               Mimi               and               her               husband               at               251               Menlove               Ave.

    from               age               5               to               age               22.

    The               Beatles'               first               No.

    1               hit,               "Please               Please               Me,"               was               written               at               this               house.
                   George               Harrison               and               Ringo               Starr's               Houses               
                   
                   Applications               for               a               similar               designation               for               lead               guitarist               George               Harrison's               home               and               drummer               Ringo               Starr's               home               were               turned               down,               as               the               band               did               not               use               these               locations               to               compose               and               rehearse.

    Until               age               6,               George               lived               at               12               Arnold               Grove,               where               there               was               a               single               coal               fire               and               an               outdoor               toilet.

    His               family               then               moved               to               25               Upton               Green.

    Ringo's               very               first               house               at               9               Madryn               Street               is               located               in               a               section               currently               marked               for               demolition               and               replacement               with               new               social               housing.

    The               house               where               Ringo               lived               for               20               years               stands               at               10               Admiral               Grove.
                   Casbah               Club               
                   
                   The               basement               of               a               large               Victorian               house               was               called               the               Casbah               Club.

    In               West               Derby,               Liverpool,               it               is               another               local               listed               site               associated               with               the               Fab               Four.

    In               this               house               owned               and               operated               by               the               mother               of               Pete               Best,               an               early               band               member,               on               opening               night               in               1959,               the               Quarrymen               (including               Paul,               John,               and               George)               performed               live.

    We               are               reminded               that               the               future               Beatles               were               among               the               local               teenagers               frantically               decorating               and               painting               the               club               basement               for               their               opening               night.

    When               you               stop               in,               be               sure               to               see               the               silver               stars               that               John               Lennon               painted               onto               the               ceiling               that               afternoon,               August               29,               1959.

                   International               Beatles               Week               is               August               22-28,               2012.

    In               addition               to               hosting               the               world's               largest               Beatles               Convention,               the               city               of               Liverpool               has               planned               celebrations               around               the               50th               anniversary               of               the               forming               of               The               Beatles,               marked               by               the               year               in               which               Ringo               Starr               joined               Paul,               John,               and               George.

    The               program               includes               a               street               festival,               special               performances               by               the               Royal               Liverpool               Philharmonic               Orchestra,               and               the               premiere               of               a               play               about               the               life               of               their               manager,               Brian               Epstein,               opening               in               November               in               the               new               Epstein               Theatre.

    On               December               9,               2012,               there               will               be               a               candlelit               John               Lennon               Peace               Vigil               marking               the               32nd               anniversary               of               Lennon's               death.

    Since               the               "Peace               and               Harmony"               European               Peace               Monument               was               unveiled               by               Julian               and               Cynthia               Lennon               on               John's               birthday               in               2010,               it               has               been               the               gathering               place               for               this               annual               remembrance.
